Informix 7.3 on Sun Microsystems Hardware
Posted in 1999
User asked whether migrating from Informix 5.10 to 7.3 on a 2-CPU Sun Ultra2 would cause performance degradation. One respondent reported experiencing degradation on large tables after upgrading to 7.3 on dual-CPU hardware, but found significant improvement after running UPDATE STATISTICS. The resolution was to run UPDATE STATISTICS at MEDIUM level or higher on large tables with millions of rows.

Does anyone have any experience with Informix 7.3 on a 2-CPU machine 1.5 GB RAM Sun Ultra2 Model 2170 machine? I'm sure that a 4 CPU machine would probably work better with a 7.3 Informix engine, but if we stick with a 2-CPU machine, is it possible to get a performance degradation instead of performance improvement when migrating from Informix 5.10 to Informix 7.3 ?? Thanks!

Unlikely. The most recent speed improvements to 7.30 have put it in direct competition with 5.xx for raw speed on even simple queries according to the general consensus. Art S. Kagel

Definitely get 7.30.UC5-1 and Solaris 2.6!! >Art S. Kagel -- David Williams
We have gone from Solaris single CPU Ultra2 to Solaris dual CPU Ultra2 and upgraded from engine 5.xx to 7.3 and found a degradation in performance. Particularly in tables with large numbers of rows (> 2,000,000). Since running a regular update statistics on the relevant tables we have found a significant performance improvement. Good point Dale. On cannot over emphasize the importance of UPDATE STATISTICS to AT LEAST MEDIUM in a 7.xx environment! It is best to follow the recommendations in the release notes for the lowest cost method for getting useful statistics, or download my dostats.ec utility from the IIUG Software Repository in package utils2_ak which implements those recommendations automatically with additional options. > Dale Stewart > > "Art S. Thanks all for your helpful hints and comments. We've decided to go with a 4 CPU machine. I'll keep you posted. -Dino Art S.
