Informix SE 5 and Large Database

I am running Informix SE 5 on an ATT 3425 tower with 512M and 25gb of raid. I am experiencing frequent system lockups when adding rows to some tables. It appears the UFS files system is having to make copies of data when it expands and this takes a long time (some times as much as 3 minutes). I have considered artificially growing the tables with invalid data and then deleting the added rows during off shift to allow the movement to occur without effecting the system during prime time. Is this a viable idea. We cannot afford the upgrade to Online at this time. I have switched from RAID level 5 to RAID level 4.
