ontape RH ES3 to RH ES 4

I'm trying to port a database from RH ES3 to RH ES4, and just to make it
interesting, IDS 9.40.UC5XD to IDS 10. The latter part should be no big deal
as I was assured ontape from 9.4 to 10 would work (10 is really 9.5 right).
ontape -r on the RH ES4 server returns
Please mount tape 1 on /dev/st0 and press Return to continue ...
Floating point exception
archecker on the RH ES4 says
STATUS: Scan FAILED
ERROR: Archive Physical Validation Failed.
STATUS: archecker completed Validation pid = 21385 exit code: 3
On the RH ES4 server I can do
dd if=/dev/st0 of=ontape.out bs=2048 count=3000
and get valid data out. strings ontape.out shows relavent database
information. So I know the tape drive can read the tape successfully. And that
there is good data there.
Is it possible to use ontape to transfer a database from RH ES3 to RH ES4?
Does ontape from IDS 9.4 to 10 indeed work?
The ontape might work but I'd be surprised

Just upgrading from 9.40 to 10.00 causes all sorts of system table
modifications and updates (been there, done that). I don't see how
restoring 9.40 ontape to 10.00 could work.

Why not use the normal migration methods, such as dbexport/dbimport?
Besides you'll want to
modify your onconfig for the new parms in V10.00.
