Synchronizing IDS between HP Itanium and Risc Ser
Posted in 2007
A user running IDS 10.00.FC5 on HP-UX Itanium (production) and HP-UX PA-RISC (test) asked how to refresh the test database daily from production, without using Enterprise Replication. Suggestions included dbexport/dbimport, unload/load via pipes, dbload or HPL, insert-into-select across servers, or a remote onbar restore (as one poster does with TSM). Some doubted backup/restore would work across the two architectures, but another reported that HP-UX IA64 and PA-RISC 64-bit IDS are compatible and that he had successfully restored ontape backups from PA-RISC to IA64 (using the native IDS build on each box), with copying data files also possible during downtime. Talk then turned to whether HDR could work across the two platforms, with a link to an IBM support note; no definitive answer from the original poster is recorded.

We have two installation of IDS 10.00 FC5 one on HP Itanium server
(production) and the other on HP PA Risc server (test).
We use onbar to backup the instance on the itanium server.
Question/Problem: How do we sync the database on the risc server with that on
the Itanium server?
Limitation: ER is not an option
Schedule: We want to do this activity daily as a End of Day activity
Any help will be highly appreciated.

If ER is not an option (why not?) you will have to use
dbexport/dbimport (if you have sufficient shared filestore or a
compatible tape drive on both machines) else SQL unload to pipe/load
from pipe or dbload from pipe or HPL else sql insert into ... select
... from ... else some esoteric insert/update/delete triggers to an
intermediate table and pull these together at the end of the day.
Better still get two matching servers and just run an archive on one
and restore to the other, dead easy and dead quick !!
I have onething in the mind .... Please check this.
Take contineous logical log backup of HP Itanium server .And at the end of
the day using the same tapes please do logical restore on on HP PA Risc
server.

I do this between several IBM servers on a weekly basis. I move
production to QA boxes and such...however I always have the same OS, so
I'm not sure if that might be an issue.. anyway I do a remote restore
using onbar. I have TSM for my storage manager, so all I have to do is
swap the node and password in the control files. Then when onbar asks for
the tape, it goes to the remote servers tapes. You also have to have the
right ixbar,.xx file on the target server...

Not much chance of this! Surely PA-RISC and Itanium run on totally
different processors and the O/S s are binary incompatible therefore
there is no way an archive from one would restore on the other. Also
you would need to leave the test system in a constant state of restore
in preparation for the next tape full of logs. This would prevent all
access to the data thus making the whole server just so much tin
consuming electricity !

onbar and ontape both require identical (or very close versions) of
the same OS on similar hardware and identical versions of IDS in order
to restore. I don't think PA-Risc and Itanium are close enough !
Keith
Hi,
HPUX IA64 and HPUX PA-Risc (64bit IDS version) are compatible.
If the IDS versions are the same on both machines you can backup
on one server and restore to the other - this works at least
with ontape and from PA-Risc to IA64. We have used that several
times for migration from PA-Risc to IA64.
But you have to use the native IDS version on both machines - the
IDS HPUX IA64 version on the Itanium box and the IDS HPUX PA-Risc 64bit
version on the PA-Risc box.
If you have a downtime on the production system you could even copy
the datafiles/raw devices.
