Installation of IDS 10
Posted in 2005
A user installing IDS 10 on a Debian Linux box found ids_install appeared to want X11 and, when run on the console, completed the wizard but left no $INFORMIXDIR/bin, /etc etc., with only a vague Java-arguments warning in the log. Others noted the installer also runs in text/silent mode and that it installs via rpm. The cause was that rpm was missing/not working on the Debian box, so the package installs silently failed. Suggested fixes: install rpm, create /var/lib/rpm and run 'rpm --initdb' (so 'rpm -qa' works), then install with ./install_rpm -acceptlicense=yes. The poster planned to move to a Red Hat test box.

Has anyone had any experience in installing IDS 10? I've just given it a shot, and had two issues. 1) It seems to need some sort of Xwindows interface. Without going and getting some X11 client software and going through the huge headache that that is, is there any way to install Informix 10 strictly from the command line? Our workaround here was to install it directly logged onto the machine which might help now, but is not usually practical. 2) After I got ids_install to run, after it was complete, I didn't see any of the directories I would expect to. There was no $INFORMIXDIR/bin, no $INFORMIXDIR/etc, or anything. I even checked to see if it put those under $INFORMIXDIR/SERVER/, just in case, but they're not there either. I ran ids_install as root, I set and exported INFORMIXDIR, and added $INFORMIXDIR/bin to the PATH. I can't seem to find any part of the README.html file or the v10 Installation Guide to lend any further insight. Any ideas out there? Thanks. --John Bejarano.
I have installed it several times on different platforms. I have always installed on character telnet session using ids_install. Not had any problem. Maybe you deselected all the packages from the install (just guessing). Installation works with not any problem, in text mode or gui mode. I've installed it on Windows XP-Pro And Linux (Mandrake 10.1 & Mandriva LE 2005 (10.2) in Text mode, Gui Mode and silent mode. So, What are the steps, you are taking? All I'm doing is taking the tar file from IBM, placing it in the INFORMIXDIR-to-be, untarring the file, setting INFORMIXDIR, adding $INFORMIXDIR/bin to PATH, setting JDBCDIR to $INFORMIXDIR/jdbc, and DISPLAY to 127.0.0.1:0. Then, I run ids_install as root. The user and group informix do exist. When connected remotely, I'm not sure that DISPLAY was set correctly, or even at all, so that may have explained the first issue. However, once I was actually on the machine, and set all of these variables as such, I do get all the way through the installation wizard, but after it completes, none of the expected directories exist like $INFORMIXDIR/etc or $INFORMIXDIR/bin. It's very frustrating. When I run ids_install with a log file, there is one suspect message that appears: Warning: internal error parsing Java arguments. Launcher command may be missing Java Arguments. After that message is the very large Java call that executes the installer. There are no other error messages in the log. Again, the installer appears to be going through all the motions one might expect, asking all the questions, extracting, installing, branding, etc. Then, I see nothing. --John Bejarano. --- Jean Sagi <jeansagi@myrealbox.com> wrote: > Installation works with not any problem, in text > mode or gui mode. > > I've installed it on Windows XP-Pro And Linux > (Mandrake 10.1 & Mandriva LE 2005 (10.2) in Text > mode, Gui Mode and silent mode. > > So, What are the steps, you are taking? > > > J. > > -----Original Message----- > From: "John Bejarano " <jbejarano@sbcglobal.net> > To: ids@iiug.org > Date: Wed, 11 May 2005 17:31:09 -0400 (EDT) > Subject: Installation of IDS 10 [4910] > > Has anyone had any experience in installing IDS 10? > I've just given it a shot, and had two issues. > > 1) It seems to need some sort of Xwindows > interface. > Without going and getting some X11 client software > and > going through the huge headache that that is, is > there > any way to install Informix 10 strictly from the > command line? Yes, I'm hoping that it's something local to the server. I'm installing on a small 1U single-CPU commodity box with Debian Linux installed on it. I requested all three products that the menu offers to be installed, (the engine, I-Connect, and JDBC). This instance is intended for test purposes only. I'm hoping we can get a slightly more robust platform which may render this academic. It's just frustrating since I've installed v7.x a zillion times, and now with this "smart" installer, I can't (apparently) get it to work. The other note about the instance is that $INFORMIXDIR is actually a symbolic link to the true directory where this stuff is. Could that be confusing it somehow? Thanks again for all your help. I had the same symptoms when installing IDS 10 on a Gentoo Linux box that did not have rpm. There were a bunch of messages about "installing XYZ using rpm" that did not throw up any warnings even though they were failing. Once I'd installed rpm it worked fine. Donny
Hi,
I could install IDS 10.00.UC1 on Debian Sarge without problems.
Following are some topics you should check:
- i686 compatible processor
- Linux kernel 2.4.21 or higher
- glibc 2.3.2 or higher (i686 version)
The glibc build for i686 processor should be installed automatically if a i686
or higher optimized kernel is selected in Debian installer. Otherwise
libc6-i686 must be installed.
- libstdc++.so.5
- libpam.so.0
- is rpm installed and working? (e.g. command 'rpm -qa' should work)
Then copy the content of directory SERVER from the bundle to $INFORMIXDIR and
use rpm based install method:
# cd $INFORMIXDIR
# ./install_rpm -acceptlicense=yes

Have you tried the textmode install? Any way all the automatic installations use java... which actually install IDS by using IIF.jar. I think you might have an issue with Java. I barely read in the installer manual that if you're on Linux then you can do a manual installation via rpm. If I'm not bad there is a section about it. Try it, and see what happen. J. Amazing
when it's the silly things. Yes, rpm was not
installed on this box. That was what was holding it
up. Sadly, Informix can't be installed on this box
anyway. The box was set up with Debian Linux which
apparently won't let you (the installer in this case)
run rpm directly. It prompts with an error message
that 'alien' must be used instead.
True, Informix is not certified to run on Debian
Linux, but we were hoping to just put it there to try
and get some testing done. We'll be making a Red Hat
test box soon. Thanks again for everyone's help on
this.

Hi,
don't worry, I think you did not initialized rpm correctly on your Debian
Sarge system. I assume the command 'rpm -qa' did not work. Instead you get a
error message like
rpm: To install rpm packages on Debian systems, use alien. See README.Debian.
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2)
Check if the directory /var/lib/rpm exists. If it do not exist or there is
anything other, move it away and create an empty directory /var/lib/rpm:
# mkdir /var/lib/rpm
Then initialize the rpm Database:
# rpm --initdb
Now the command 'rpm -qa' (for query all installed packages) should run
without printing an error message. It will return nothing because no rpm
package is installed until now. After installing IDS it returns the 3
packages.
