Imbedding Special CHaracters in ESQL Statements

We are developing an application which accesses Informix 7 tables through
Openlink32 ODBC drivers and we are having difficulty getting the embedded
SQL to accept special character including (but not limited to) carriage
returns and line feeds. An example of what we are attempting to do is
below:
Table Name: TEST_TABLE
(int) (varchar)
COL1 COL2
-------------------------------------
12345 Hello
Bill
12346 Hello Jim
12347 Hello Dave
Note, that the first row has the two words seprated by a carriage
return.
That is why it shows up in two separate lines.
This is the SQL statement we would use to create rows 2 and 3:
INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE VALUES (12346, "Hello Jim")
INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE VALUES (12347, "Hello Dave")
WHAT SQL STATEMENT WE SHOULD USE TO CREATE ROW 1 ???
