IDUG Conference
Posted in 2006
Not a technical problem thread — it's a feedback discussion about the May 2006 IDUG conference in Tampa. Attendees reported roughly 1,100 total attendees with maybe 100–150 identifying as IIUG/Informix people, praised the venue, the Informix session content and the IIUG organisers (including re-running sessions that clashed), and complained about cost, lacklustre receptions and especially the poor food. Art Kagel reported positive signals from IBM futures/marketing sessions and mention of a next release (10.5) expected in early 2007. Several posters said they'd skip IDUG in favour of the December Users Forum in DC. No technical issue or resolution involved.

Just curious, if you attended the IDUG Conference this week, can you share any thoughts or comments about the event? Likes? Dislikes?
Didn't attend....Too damned expensive!!! Will do the users forum in DC this Dec. though! I would be curious to know the number of informix attendees at IDUG compared to Lester's and Walt's last year in Atlanta! peace "Hamilton, Jerry" <hamiltoj@fleishm an.com> To Sent by: ids@iiug.org ids-bounces@iiug. cc org Subject IDUG Conference [6710] 05/12/2006 02:27 PM Please respond to ids@iiug.org Just curious, if you attended the IDUG Conference this week, can you share any thoughts or comments about the event? I don't have any attendance numbers. I did hear the overall conference totaled around 1,100. It appeared to be well attended by Informix users. I thought the Tampa Conference Center was a nice place. I thought all the Informix sessions were good. There were a handful of session conflicts that the IIUG dealt with nicely allowing users to *vote* for repeating a session during some open time slots at the end of the conference. I really enjoyed seeing and hanging out with some old friends, sharing ideas on how we do our jobs, what we're up to in our jobs and personal lives, and realizing how much I miss them throughout the year. I thought there were too many blue people there and I'm not talking about the ones that came over from the Informix world. Lunch on Wednesday was really bad. Lunch on Tuesday wasn't great either. The receptions were nothing special. I thought Stuart and his 'crew did a good job. I thought the IIUG CPC folks did a great job. I was told by a handful of DB2 folks that it appeared the blue people just don't treat Informix *right*. I too look forward to Forum 2006, December 8th and 9th, I think it truly is Informix' greatest event. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Darren_Jaco.... Someone replied to me and corrected me about the food. The food sucked. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Hamilton, Jerry Sent: Friday, May 12, 2006 3:01 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: RE: IDUG Conference [6712] I don't have any attendance numbers. I was there Sun. morning for the Sun. 1/2 day seminars and they ran out of food for the continental breakfast! SOMEBODY miscalculated. And enuf of those vegetarian lunches! I was pleasantly surprised at the new features "that would be nice to have" (MadisonP) in the next release 10.5, that will be released "in one of the first quarters next year" (JerryK)!! I attended and presented. I found the conference even more productive than the one last year - mainly because there was no reason for me to waste time taking in any DB2 sessions this year <grin>. There was a futures session to which about 1/3 of the Informix users attending were invited to get info from IBM and give feedback that they are on the right track - they are! There was a meeting with the head of Information Management marketing and of Informix Marketing and it was clear from that session that while they don't yet understand fully what they are doing, they finally 'Get It' about IDS and are actively selling the product and are beginning to understand why we all love the product beyond the simple loyalty issues that IBM once thought was the entire picture. There were somewhere between 100 & 150 attendees who identified with IIUG instead of IDUG, but the numbers are not final as some IIUG members registered as IDUG either in error or because their firms are both. Considering the extra expense that compares favorably with Atlanta. Art S. Art, I was one that was unable to attend. Is there any chances that you will be attending the Users Forum in DC this year? I'm considering it. The problem for me is that it is a Friday so I would have to present early in the AM and then rush to fly back to NJ for the Sabbath which is just about its earliest at that time of year. I did that to present at the WAIUG Forum 2002 and it was not fun, but Lester and James have asked rather nicely so I am considering it. Stay tuned....
