you can use dbaccess to change the size of the column.
It won't "screw up" the database, but any programs that reference
the column may have to be modified and will have to be recompiled.
The programs that reference it must be checked for any definitions
that use the column. I am assuming that your programs are written
with informix 4GL. Hopefully, any references were defined using
the "LIKE column-name" syntax. If you don't have a test environment
and database, now may be a good time to set one up.
