How to deploy reports made with Crystal Reports ?
Posted in 1998
We build some reports using Crystal Reports V6 and they work "fine" with ODBC driver to our Informix Online Workgroup Server on SCO-Unix and NT 4. We tried 2 ODBC drivers, one from Informix (Intersolv 3.0 from Informix CLI 2.5) and the other given with Crystal Report. The Intersolv driver let us see all tables from any databases and retrieves any data - good surprise The Crystal driver let see only tables owned by the user ID we give to connect to the database. As many users can execute the scripts that create tables it looks like we can't gain access to ALL tables at one time - Any solutions ? (except synonyms please) Things become quite complicated as we want to deploy these reports to our customers. Then, the database server name, user, password, and even database name can be different. We can only impose the name of the DataSource configured in the ODBC driver. I took a look at the hexdump of the Report file (*.rpt) and see that DataSource, database name, database server name and user are stored in this file. How can we run this report without having to change interactively the connection strings each time it's launched ? We use the "winexec" function of Dynamic 4gl (located on the Unix ou NT server) to run the report on the client side so we can't give any parameters or things like that. Do you think it will work as is or do we have to make our own runner on the client side to call Crystal Report API ???
