There are usually several ways to solve a problem. We used the unix epoch. Why the epoch? During the 2000 time-change scare we found that all unix computers don't keep time. They count seconds starting at January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00. Then they convert those seconds into a time that we humans can easily understand. Years later we sometimes use the unix epoch because it sometimes greatly simplifies our code. And we still use it in some of our scripts, but within SQL, Mike's way is probably better.
