I would rate Informix at a 4.8. I would rate tools and 3rd party packages that talk to Informix at about a 3. Most of these vendors still shoot for market share, NOT superior performance, support, ... I am using Informix 7.2.x for both Data Warehouse and a Warehouse / Distribution Management System on 2 AIX 8 way boxes. These use a combination of 4GL, HPL, SQL, ESQL/C and other than a few minor quirks, these have been very reliable over the last 4 years. The thing that I do not like is third party vendors. For example, Logic Works ERWin supported Informix natively on a Win 3.1 desktop but now that I have NT 4.0 for my desktop, ERWin only can use ODBC. Their model mart repository can use MS SQL Server and Oracle but not Informix. IBM's CMVC version control software can use DB2 and Oracle but not Informix for their repository. On the other hand vendors like BMC and SAP integrate very well with Informix and even use them in their own orgs. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth. R. Kirk Waterhouse
