Re: Sorry, Yet another TERMCAP type query!

I have to ask why first of all! but that aside heres how see the problem. Note that J. Parker is correct and what he means is this; 1. On a dumb terminal or software emulation package (such as FTP's telnet VT emulator or Novell's TNVT220 emulator) the function keys are set to send a particular sequence of characters usually preceded by an escape or control character. On a Vt100 terminal these are usually \\EOP, \\EOQ, \\EOR, \\EOS for the keys F1/2/3 and F4 respectivly and the k0/1/2/3 strings in termcap (the \\E stands for the escape character and termcap function keys strings start at k0 not k1(terminfo starts at kf1)). 2. These days the above is usually referred to as the client end (although X uses the terminology differently). It is the client side that needs to send control-b, in order for it to be recognised by the application, on a dumb terminal usually you can program the function keys to send the required control-b sequence, an emulator package however usually allows key mapping facilities to be modified to send the required string, these mechanisms differ according to the package you use. 3. There is however a further complication in your case in that for the tbmonitor application needs to recognise the appropriate termcap name (eg k0 or k1) in order for it to respond, this has to be coded into the application itself and although i've never tried it I dont think tbmonitor has this capability. To summarise. You can get tbmonitor to respond to a funtion key only if at the client end you ensure that the control-b string is being sent when you press the relevant function key, it is not required to modify termcap entries in anyway, unless the host application actually makes direct use of its facilities in which case both the client and host ends must be in complete agreement about the escape sequences sent and received.
