Yes.

Yes. Normally do everything as informix and so owner names do not
appear above.

Yes. Check the installation guide. You MUST have user infromix and
group informix for installation.
Some Informix executables are owned by informix and should be group
informix. What does ls -l $INFORMIXDIR/bin give?
PS Some commands e.g. tbmode/onmode can only be executed by root or
informix. Since you do not have a user informix I suspect this is
why root was used.
