Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
SQL NET asked, running Informix 9.30 on SCO Unix, why tables could be created in rootdbs when the raw device had restrictive permissions. Jonathan Leffler explained the permissions are correct and oninit runs SUID root and SGID informix to open the chunks. SQL NET said the reply was not understood, and Marcus Haarmann asked what the real problem was. Unresolved.

my dbspaces is linked by raw device.but,i have some problem.
/home/informix/data>l -rt
crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 7679, 19 Aug 23 15:53 rootdbs@
/home/informix/data>> rootdbs
i has covered this rootdbs, why can i create table,or insert data within it ?
moreover,it can run after "onmode -ky" and "oninit -v" this database.

Well, you wouldn't want to had to let the whole world scribble on you
valuable data, so you wouldn't want the permissions any looser (public
read blows any connection security). You do need the system to be
able to modify the database - for any user. So, IDS runs a SUID root,
SGID informix program called oninit, and uses the temporary, raised
privileges to open and modify the underlying chunks.

Hi,
I believe you question has to be more specific, Jonathan did just point out
that the permissions are set correctly for the rootdbs chunk.
So, what is your problem really (since everything is working correctly as I
understand ...)
