Re: Informix vs. Oracle Question

I am going through this process right now. Informix (IMHO) is much easier to manage and set up. Backup and recovery in v7 is adequate at best but is much better in v8. Where most (if not all Informix sites) use raw disc most Oracle sites use cooked file systems. If you have a choice go to Oracle8 as soon as possible. More 3rd party tools exist for Oracle but given it is more complicated to manage they are absolutely required in large installations. The redo and archive log process is ugly and a real headache. A very nice feature in 7.3.3 is the index rebuild which allows for inplace index rebuilds using data in the existing index - real cool. Well, those are just a few things off the top of my head. Be prepared to spend money on 3rd party tools to do what you dont need them for today in Informix.
