Basically when I saw it it was because the INFORMIX software had been poorly installed. In my case the files had been installed into / instead of 'INFORMIXDIR/ Later somebody had done the correct installation into the INFORMIX directory but the path had /bin before $INFORMIXDIR/bin so the wrong files were picked up. I know of many people who have made this mistake and got away with it for years only to hit the problem when they install a new version of INFORMIX at a later time.
