The fun part about Oracle is that the customer is willing to pay more for something that is demonstrably less in quality than Informix. But it's not really the database that Oracle people are buying, it's the applications. In the Oracle Application space, the database is just another part of the puzzle, not the center-piece of attention. Which is primarily why Oracle sells more than any other software out there, they sell applications with a database--and coincidentally it's their own database. If you look at the peer group of applications that Oracle Applications competes with, there really aren't any using Informix, or DB2, on the same scale as Oracle. This is the major flaw with IBM, they really don't have an app they can sell with Informix that businesses just gotta have. Until then Informix is just a database languishing in nowhere. After working with Oracle for some time now I am absolutely amazed and amused by the sheer will of people to believe in it, despite it being a monstrosity and footprint like an elephant. If Oracle were a motorized vehicle they'd have to build special roads just to accommodate its weight. I see very little if any documentation that touts Oracles' engine threading, instead I see an engine heavily dependent on bubbling out more and more processes, like something out of the Disney movie The Scorcerers' Apprentice. In the Oracle space there is no question that one must build the largest bare metal machine possible to accommodate its resource intensive hogging. Note too that Oracle does not support its use in VMWare, but they do sell their own VM now, which is also not certified. It is comical and lovable to work with Oracle, only because after using Informix do you see how absolutely silly it is for anyone to have ported anything to Oracle. It's a big, lovable beast. Informix needs to be more like Oracle and they will succeed. Oracle will continue to give me better billable for the rest of my life, who cares if Informix ever makes it, it will never generate enough momentum to mean anything in the market. The few folks that _are_ using it may indeed some day get better billable, only because like COBOL programmers they will be few to be found. I'd love to, but the company you're cheerleading for won't allow it. They have much better lawyers than I do. Get them to agree to it, and I'll be all over it -- as will many others, I suspect. -- Bye now, Obnoxio "There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the Labour Party. They promised you order, they promised you peace, and all they demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent."
