Mostly off-topic chat: a ComputerWorld piece about Yahoo! building a fast-read/slow-write data store on PostgreSQL (led by an ex-Informix engineer) prompted a question of whether modifications must be published; Serge Rielau noted PostgreSQL's BSD licence lets products like EDB and Netezza stay closed, requiring only attribution. The thread is then hijacked by Bill Hamilton, whose third instance of IDS 11.10.TC1DE Developer Edition on Windows Server 2008 x64 fails with an assert in rspseudo.c line 10038, 'Cannot build/check sysmaster'. The only reply says Developer Edition carries no IBM support (PartnerWorld may allow test-environment calls); no fix for the build_smi failure is recorded.

Well, it only mentions Informix because the Yahoo! techo-geek came
from Informix.
The interesting thing is that they took an opensource off the shelf
database and tweaked the storage. Faster reads, really slow writes.
No surprises there. Of course if they were to ever resell this, they'd
have to release their proprietary code.
The point is that for certain special needs, you have to write your
own dbms, and they just used Postgres as a starting platform.

Postgress is BSD licensed. There are various products based on Portgress
that do not release their source code. (such as EDB, Netezza, etc..)

Well its been a while since I read the bsd license.
So what's required if you tweak the code?

I'm told all you have to do is give credit.
But I'm no expert either.
Cheers

Is it possible to get email support from IBM on 11.10.TC1DE developer edition?
This is on Window Server 2008, 64 bit.
I have 2 instances that run fine. I am trying to add another instance.
One is using turbo for the service name. The other is using svc_custom.
I started another instance with svc_custom and it failed as below.
Then I tried turbo1. It failed again, as below.
I have 3 instances running fine on Vista x64.
Any idea what rspseudo.c Line: 10038 is or how to find out from IBM?I cannot read the dumps in notepad or vi (Lemmy) .

I thought that the principle of a Developers' edition was that you *didn't*
get support with it.
If you're a member of PartnerWorld I think there's the facility to raise
support calls for test environments.
On the other hand I'm sure IBM would like to get notifications of apparent
bugs from whatever source, so perhaps scottishpoet or one of the other
readers who seems to know the IBM support machinery can better advise ....?
