We used to use SE 5.x, but installed 7.x at a user site some time ago. They have significantly changed the update statistics functionality to also be in line with OnLine 7.x. This lead to major problems for us, as we had to do a lot of update statistics high to the most unlikely columns (including non indexed ones) to make joins run reasonably. This was harder than it is with OnLine (at least the experience we have had so far). On the other hand we where also able to get rid of some problems we had with joins in 5.x where they would allways take the wrong path. Appart from this, our very informal checks show no performance improvment. (Getting rid of the wrong join was a significant performance improvment to the users though.) With OnLine on the same hardware as SE (under SCO Unix) we saw a 2 to 4 times performance improvement overall when we upgraded from SE 5.x to OnLine 7.x (or may be it was 6.x at the time) a long time ago at a site. There where also however a few special cases where SE where a little faster. This was on an OLTP database with 20 to 30 users, about 1 Gb of data, main tables accessed had about 500.000 rows and about 100 tables in all.
