Logical Log Files are Full -- Backup is Needed
Posted in 2010
After upgrading to IDS 11.70.FC1 on HP-UX, the server blocked on checkpoints with "Logical Log Files are Full -- Backup is Needed", even though LTAPEDEV pointed to a disk file and manual 'ontape -a' worked. Replies noted the upgrade likely overwrote/reset the automatic log-backup setup: ALARMPROGRAM must point to a valid alarmprogram.sh with BACKUPLOGS=Y and BACKUP_CMD="ontape -a -d" (others suggested /dev/null LTAPEDEV, changeable via onmonitor). Setting ALARMPROGRAM to /usr/informix/etc/alarmprogram.sh fixed it.

I have updated IDS to IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.FC1.
Unix OS - HP-UX B.11.31 - ia64
After update I am getting following message.
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.FC1 -- On-Line (CKPT REQ)
Up 04:53:11 -- 215824 KbytesBlocked:CKPT
10:12:01 Maximum server connections 0
10:12:01 Checkpoint Statistics - Avg. Txn Block Time 0.000, # Txns blocked 1,
Plog used 6, Llog used 7
10:12:01 Logical Log Files are Full -- Backup is Needed
--------------------------------------------------------------
LTAPE is set as LTAPEDEV /Backup/tapedev - which is a big drive
When I manually backup logical logs using ontape -a command it works.
I also tried LTAPEDEV /tmp but it does not work.
Thank you
Kanti
Hi,
If you don't care about your logical logs then change the value of LTAPEDEV to
/dev/null. Unfortunately you will need to stop and restart the instance to
make this change take affect. A better option is to create a symbolic link
through to /dev/null. Say /dev/kknull or something like that. Good luck.

You can change the value of LTAPEDEV through onmonitor and it will make the change immediately w/o the need for bouncing the engine.
If you don't run ontape -a or ontape -c to back up the logs, how are you
expecting that they are being backed up instead?
If you were using a script in the ALARMPROGRAM to back up each logical log
file as it fills, it may be that you were using a modified version of the
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/logs_full.sh script. However, the upgrade will have
installed the original IBM supplied version of that script which wants to
use onbar to back up logs, and since you do not have onbar's storage manager
configured, those onbar back ups are failing.

1. In your $ONCONFIG check if ALARMPROGRAM is set to the right value
like /opt/informix/ids1150/etc/alarmprogram.sh
2. Edit alarmprogram.sh and set:
BACKUPLOGS=Y
BACKUP_CMD="ontape -a -d"
3. Bounce the engine

After changing the ALARMPROGRAM in $ONCONFIG to /usr/informix/etc/alarmprogram.sh it works. Now I am not getting the message "Logical Log Files are Full - Backup is Needed". Thank you all Kanti
