With Version 7.20, the GLS feature allows you to specify language specific 'locales' via Informix environment variables. eg., for ISO-German you could specify at the prompt ... % DB_LOCALE=de_DE.8859-1 % CLIENT_LOCALE=de_DE.8859-1 % export DB_LOCALE CLIENT_LOCALE For the 'operating system locales', it could simply be 'de' instead of de_de.8859-1 eg., % DB_LOCALE=de % CLIENT_LOCALE=de % export DB_LOCALE CLIENT_LOCALE Typically a locale consists of the following attributes or categories .. o Character classification o Collation classification o Numeric formatting o Currency formatting o Date and Time formatting. A locale is of the form language_territory.codeset (ll_tt.codeset). This does not apply to 'operating system locales'. Note that an 'operating system locale' is a locale contained in the Informix distribution, and one that is identical to the locale which is bundled with the os. As for the display of 8 bit ascii characters, the terminal setting must have an appropriate stty value ... % stty cs8 -istrip will display umlauts or graves etc,. in its character format.
