Glad to listen to any opinions... thanks Cynthia, You have several choices : Informix, Oracle, Sybase and MS SQL Server. If you're going to have many users, you should choose Unix server. If you're going to use an NT, all those above databases are available on NT (Microsoft SQL Server does not run on Unix). If you choose MS SQL Server, there is no way for you to upgrade your systems to Unix in case you find out you need more powerful server ! MS SQL server is based on Sybase SQL server. Microsoft joined with sysbase and after it got the technology kicked their butt ! (How foolish sybase was ?!!). I don't have experience with Oracle. But, if you choose Informix on NT, you can always upgrade your systems to more powerful Unix Servers. Informix has both online dynamic server (ODS) and workgroup servers on the NT platform. Recently they were able to get a better result on compaq servers running NT (even better than Microsoft who owns the OS !). By choosing Informix, you have planty of choices. You can use different kinds of Unix and/or servers and even super computers. About Sybase, to tell you the truth they are not in a good situation these days. They are still paying the price for their System X ! Nobody knows how long they are going to stay in the market.
