Cannot create temp tables

Not a corporate problem this but irritating nevertheless. I have SQL
4.13.UDI running on SCO UNIX 3.2 and as the creator of a database, I'm
unable to execute the "CREATE TEMP TABLE table (table_id INTEGER); "
statement. The error I get is
261: Cannot create file for table (USER.table)
1: Not owner
As USER I get this even if I just create a dummy database. Since I have
a single user system, I have made sure that /tmp and all directories
where a temp table might be placed have 777 permissions and there is
planty of space. If su to informix, I can create the hich then exists in
/tmp.
I can of course create normal tables.
Can anyone throw light on what I need to do?
I'd be grateful
