If you do:
create trigger xxxxx
insert on tab1
after (update somedb@remoteserver:sometable set x=somevalue,
update tab1 set col1 = "blah blah" )
it works, probably cause of 2 phase commit needed.
This is a TODO for Informix:
Get rid of this stupid error described below !!!
