Testing of Archive tapes.

Dear all I am sure my problem is a common one. Our instance here is 10 Gig. Does anyone know of a way to test the viability of an ontape archive without actually restoring the tape. I don't want to test by overwriting the live system. And I don't have 10 gig free anywhere else to test the restore to.
