Outdated ANSI standards and esql

We are endeavoring to have our esql code be ANSI compliant. To assist, we compile with the -ansi option to esql which will print a warning message against all lines that violate the ANSI standard. However, esql checks against the 1986 standard. It was revised in 1989, and the AGAIN in 1992. Why is informix two generations behind in this? Any clues?
