ontape restore STDIO econnrefused -79
Posted in 2012
User encountered ECONNREFUSED error (-79) when attempting ontape STDIO restore over rsh to remote server on Informix 11.50.FC8 AIX 6.1, returning -908 error. Remote connectivity appeared functional for other commands. Root cause was DNS configuration issues on the remote server. Resolution: fix DNS settings and use a shell script on remote server to ensure proper environment setup before running ontape.

I am setting up an HDR and ran into an issue with STDIO...
it seems the following command cannot fork a server connection :
ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO -F | rsh remove_server ontape -p -t STDIO
it will return a -908 error.
I can run onstat -m |rsh remote_server onstat -m
and read the remote target message log; "env" will show the env is setup
correctly. I can rsh without a login prompt etc.
If I remove the -t STDIO it will ask me to mount the tape so I am rsh into the
remove server fine.. I can intitiate a restore using a tape device with no
issues also. I even tried setting TAPEDEV STDIO , same thing.
I then ran the command with truss and it hangs up on ECONNREFUSED 79.
getsockopt(4, 65535, 4104, 0x0FFFFFFFFFFFDD94, 0x0FFFFFFFFFFFDD90) = 0
connext(4, 0x00000001115A71F0, 28) Err#79 ECONNREFUSED
close(4) = 0
_nsleep(0x0FFFFFFFFFFFE160, 0x0FFFFFFFFFFFE230) (sleeping...)
weird as I have done this dozen times without any issues before.
any clues ?
Thx
Mark
You have listed remove_server and remote_server Check to make sure the remove_server or remotes_server is on the target.
Instead of running ontape directly in the rsh create a script that sets up
the environment then runs ontape.

Response:
So are you getting anything in the MSGPATH file on the remote server? I
believe ontape -p has to fork off and start up an oninit process, and I would
imagine if for some reason that oninit wasn't starting up, then ontape might
report a 908 error and show a ECONNREFUSED. So perhaps there's something in
MSGPATH file that might indicate some problem.

Mark,
Send me your email address to danmueller71@comcast.net. I can give you
exactly what you need but it really is just what Art told you to do. I would
like the address anyway.
Thanx,
Dan

thx for the various responses.. its now restoring. for the record (and future reference) the issue was with the DNS ,once corrected for all worked fine; Should also mention (as Art and Dan state) it's better to use a shell script on the remote server in order to guarantee your env is setup properly:) Mark
