Informix SE - NFS - Inet - PPP (!)

I am trying to get Informix to talk to a remote database via 2 SCO Unix Servers linked via PPP. The PPP link works fine and I can mount the Database directory on the other server using NFS. If I run isql it finds the remote database, but when you confirm that the database it has found is the right one, ISQL just sits saying "Running ....." and never returns. The PPP link is via 2 dialup modems and you can see that there is activity occuring across the link, but again, Informix doesn't respond with any error messages of any sort. I have Informix I-Net on the Unix server which I thought would be the only requirement, obviously I was wrong. Anyone done this or know what may be causing the problem??? Can you actually do this might be a good place to start!! If info would be greatly appreciated.
