Changing the port no of an informix instance
Posted in 2009
A user on AIX shut down an IDS 10 instance with onmode -ky, changed the port number in sqlhosts, and then oninit failed. Responders confirmed that editing the port in sqlhosts is a valid way to change it, and that an /etc/services entry isn't needed when a numeric port is used. When the poster posted oninit -v output and the online log, the real cause appeared: the root chunk /mount/fs2/rootdbs_10 was mode 770 instead of the required 660. A chmod 660 on the chunk (and checking other chunks) fixed it and the instance started.

Hi,
An informix instance inst1 is running on 9090 port in an AIX host.
I shutted down the instance through "onmode -ky" and changed the port number
in sqlhosts file. And tried to restart the instance through "oninit" command.
After that instance is not coming UP and wanted to know is it a right way to
change the port number..??

What is the error you are getting in the on-line log?
Is there any other application using the new port number?
Why did you feel the need to change the port number in the first place?
Will the instance start if you revert to the original port?
Keith
Hi Saravanan,
If you could post some more information from the Informix log file, it would
help to narrow down the possible cause.
The most likely cause is that the port number that you are changing to, is
either not specified in the /etc/services file or it is conflicting with
something else.
if you execute
grep 9090 /etc/services
you should get the format of the line that was working.
Next check for the new port number using the same command.
grep <new number> /etc/services
make sure that the name of the service is distinct for your old and new ports
in the /etc/services file.
Another possible cause is by changing the port number in the sqlhosts file,
you have created a duplicate nettype/port combination.
If this does not help, you will need to post some more information.
Regards
Mark

Hi,
/etc/services does not have the entry for this port/service. I hope it is not
required.. Because other instances are working fine in my host, those are also
not having entries in /etc/services file.
-bash-4.0# cat /mount/fs1/informix_10.0/etc/sqlhosts.inst1inst1 onsoctcp sportage 9090
Now my question is, can we change the port number of already running
instance..?? Is it possible after shutting down the instance..??
Hi,
the /etc/services file is where the operating system looks for ports to listen
on.
It is possible to change the port number on an instance that is already
running.
1. Add an entry into the /etc/services file. You already have an entry for
port 9090/tcp, just copy that line, change the port to the port that you
desire and give the port a unique name.
2. Change the entry in the sqlhosts file, using the new number.
3. Restart the database server
4. Reconfigure the clients to access the new port.

Post the oninit -v output and the relevant lines from the end of the online
message log, or call IBM support.
Changing the port number in the sqlhosts file should be fine, no problems
there. Something else is going on.

Yes, it is possible, and you don't need an /etc/services entry if you are
using a port number rather than a service name.

-rwxrwx--- is READ/WRITE/EXECUTE permissions (770), 660 is -rw-rw---- !!
Correct this, check all your other chunks and then try to rstart the engine.
Keith
Thank You all.. It works fine.. Regards Saravanan
And there is your problem. In the log it says:
21:18:15 The chunk '/mount/fs2/rootdbs_10' must have READ/WRITE permissions
for owner and group (660).
But, as you show below the privs on the root chunk are not 660, but 770!
-bash-4.0# ls -l /mount/fs2/rootdbs_10
-rwxrwx--- 1 informix informix 30720000 Sep 18 18:02 /mount/fs2/rootdbs_10
