I think a big piece of the puzzle is also what you're doing. Raw writes will always be faster because there is a shorter code path, there is no way around it. On the other hand, reads can come from the file system cache depending on how memory is configured for the RDBMS, etc. What type of benchmark was it? Lots of OLTP style small inserts/updates with unbuffered logging? Or was it more DSS style queries?
