Re: library differences
Posted in 1999
The .a files are statically linked archives. The various .so files are shared objects. There are also threaded variants of the shared libraries on some platforms. There is no real difference between the names, but note that there is a /usr/lib/libgen.{a,so} on many systems, which collides with the Informix libgen.a name, which is what triggered the renaming. Also, this is usually not an issue unless you are trying to fake the esql script for linking purposes, in which case, you should cease trying to second guess the esql script and let it worry about the library names. Those names are subject to change in any (and every?) release. Never use them in your makefiles, for example. tqma@my-deja.com wrote: > Moving from Informix 5.0 to 7.3, I noticed that > almost all libraries come in 4 different variations. > For example: > > libifgen.a (new) > libifgen.so (new) > libixgen.so (new) > libgen.a (same as in Informix 5.0) > > libifsql.a (new) > libifsql.so (new) > libixsql.so (new) > libsql.a (same as in Informix 5.0) > > Could someone please explain what the infix 'if' and 'ix' > above stand for ? > > Thanks, > Thanh > > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ > Before you buy. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.62 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
