Re: Work group edition - Unlimited edition??
Posted in 2004
A discussion of what IBM Informix Dynamic Server Workgroup Edition licensing actually permits. Older notes listed limits (2 CPUs, no PDQ, fragmentation, parallel backup/restore/load, ER, >2GB RAM); current IBM licence text also excluded HDR. Paul Watson said his UK IBM licensing contact claimed HDR and ER were allowed if the other servers are licensed, and that standby-server licensing rules changed around 9.40/9.50. The poster then got confirmation from IBM Canada that Workgroup does not allow HDR, so the contradiction stood unresolved. A side question about the 'table level restore' claimed on the Workgroup web page also went unanswered; it isn't in the 9.4 backup/restore manual.

Here is the latest information where it is mentioned that HDR is not allowed. http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/OIX.wss?DocURL=http://d03xhttpcl001g.boulder.ibm.com This is the relevant information (somewhere in the middle of the page) ==================================== Informix Dynamic Server Workgroup Editions The following restrictions apply: Server limitation ' You may not install or use the program on a server that has more than two processors. Function limitations ' You may not use the following functions of the program: parallel data query, data partitioning, parallel backup, parallel restore, parallel load, parallel unload, optical disks, Enterprise Replication (ER), High Availability Data Replication (HDR), VML (ability to access more than two GB RAM). ====================================== if anyone from IBM is reading this, this is not a good decision. Without HDR, there is nothing on high availability. I hope they change the decision. rk-
The latest license info I've got from 'Head of UK Understanding of Licensing' is both HDR and ER are allowed under Workgroup, you need to license the other servers correctly. I've also been told that the rules have changed, until 9.40 we were allowed to run HDR/ER on a second server and there was no license requirement as long as the server was only in a 'standby' mode. With 9.40 I can't do this, with 9.50 apparently I can. However, on a Tuesday the rules are ..... :-)))) rkusenet wrote: > > "David Williams" <djw@smooth1.fsnet.co.uk> wrote > > > This information is a bit old though..perhaps things have changed? Only on clustered environment, where one instance is cold (that is not running), is the licensing limited to only one node. However HDR is very important for us, otherwise it is not considering. rk-
In the pre-IBM days I was always charged for the primary license, no secondary license, support on the primary and 50% support for the secondary. When IBM took over the support costs dropped to the primary support only. [This assumes the secondary is in stand-by] rkusenet wrote: > > "Paul Watson" <paul@oninit.com> wrote > > > The latest license info I've got from 'Head of UK Understanding > > of Licensing' is both HDR and ER are allowed under Workgroup, you need > > to license the other servers correctly. > > > > I've also been told that the rules have changed, until 9.40 we were > > allowed to run HDR/ER on a second server and there was no license > > requirement as long as the server was only in a 'standby' mode. > > With 9.40 I can't do this, with 9.50 apparently I can. > I found this > http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/workgroup/ Following this link it states table level restore. I thought the only way a table level restore was possible is by putting the table in its own dbspace. Does IDS now have a true table level restore? -Peter
I've just read that too. I am very interested in this possibility. It also says that the enterprise edition offers all workgroup features plus ... Does anybody know where the document is that shows what has changed for the new release? I have just scanned the 9.4 backup and restore guide. It doesn't mention doing a table level restore. Also, carlton doesn't mention it in the white paper, and there is no mention in the spec sheet. That doesn't mean the feature isn't there, but it does mean that it is unlikely. You might want to double check with your source in IBM-England. BTW is it possible for us to buy from IBM UK and use replication :-) rk-
