Hmmmmmm. I just started working with NT and hadn't noticed that the tools
such as onmode, onmonitor, onstat, etc do not work in client-server mode.
I tried such obvious things as changing the INFORMIXSERVER and/or
INFORMIXDIR variables, to no avail (INFORMIX!!! are we missing something
obvious here?)
However, I did find a solution to the problem. All of the tools are
character-based. I installed a copy of the Beame & Whiteside NFS products.
This will give you a telnet daemon on NT that works just like the Unix
telnet. Now I can telnet into any of the NT servers and administer them
just like I do Unix. I understand that there are some telnet products
that are available (either as shareware or PD) for NT, but I have no specifics.
I'd buy the Beame & Whiteside (http://www.bws.com, sales sales@bws.com
phone (919-831-8989) ) just to get their slick traceroute for NT (included
with the NFS tools). This is a graphical traceroute that actually draws
you a map of the path that your packet is taking.
In all fairness, I've heard that B&W software is somewhat fragile and
has been known to crash systems, but I haven't seen it yet. I think they
offer a demo....check it out).
