what about this....
select unique_table_key, col_to_compare
from tabname a
where 50 >
(select count(*) from tabname b
where b.col_to_compare > a.col_to_compare )
order by col_to_compare desc
into temp temp_table_name with no log ;
delete from tabname where unique_table_key in (select unique_table_key from temp_table_name );
