Error : 930 Cannot connect remote database
Posted in 2009
After a development server was re-imaged with a new IP and hostname (Informix 5.11 on HP-UX), remote connections via INFORMIX-STAR to production instances failed with "930: Cannot connect to database server (fieldp01)", even though /etc/hosts, hosts.equiv, .rhosts, sqlhosts and /etc/services all looked correct and rlogin/ftp worked. Suggestions included checking DNS/resolv.conf, using dbaccess/C-SDK, and verifying sqlexecd was running on the remote 5.x machines. The poster finally found nslookup failing from the production server, pointing to a DNS problem handed to the OS team (no confirmed fix posted).

Hi, we had a migration of our development server ( thru imaging ). The O/S and
informix version remains the same. Only the IP and hostname got changed.
Informix 5.11 / HP-UX B.11.00 U
After a little configuration change in /etc/hosts, /etc/hosts.equiv its up and
running and there is no problem except --
while trying to connect from dev server to any instance on the production
server using Informix STAR its failing. Earlier it was working.
If I try to connect the remote database in production instance using
isql dbname@<dbservername in sqlhosts> its returning
930: Cannot connect to database server (fieldp01).
whereas fieldp01 is the FQN of the production server.
checked all the config files
/etc/hosts
/etc/hosts.eqiv
.rhosts
sqlhosts
/etc/services
But nowhere I could find any old entry. All the dbservernames are listed in
the sqlhosts of both the servers as well as nettype remains the same.
and port numbers in services file are also remaining the same.
Could it be due to some network configuration change or something else?
Did you check DNS Servers and the addresses returned to the client
(order of DNS in /etc/resolv.conf)?

I'm not sure but I believe other clients that dbaccess must use C-SDK for
connect.
Try to connect with dbaccess from your client machine for valid the connection
is OK.
If it's true, so you must use C-SDK.
syntax to connect :
dbaccess database@informixserver

Have you got the sqlexecd running on the remote machines?
With IDS (6.00 or later), you don't need the separate daemon; with OnLine
(5.x or earlier) you do.

Hi Joerg & all, Thanks for your input. I have just detected nslookup is failing from the production server. Most likely its a DNS issue and will be taken care by the o/s team. Prabal
