A user migrating from Solaris 7/IDS 7.20 to Solaris 10/IDS 10 couldn't connect from a Windows XP client using Informix Connect 2.90 via ODBC, getting "System Error occurred in network function" on the ODBC test connection. A respondent said no special server-side settings are needed beyond matching DB_LOCALE on client and server, then gave a checklist: confirm the server is up, configure the server entry in setnet32 (host name, onsoctcp protocol, service/port, user ID and password), set INFORMIXDIR as a Windows system variable, reboot, and recreate the DSN against a test database. The thread ends there with no confirmation of a fix, so no resolution is recorded.

We are currently migrating from SUN microsystem E450/Solaris 7/IDS 7.20 to SUN
microsystem V890/Solaris 10/IDS 10. My problem is I could not access my
database from Windows XP Client using Informix Connect V 2.90 tru ODBC to
Solaris 10/IDS 10. I have followed the procedure found in the documentation
came with the Informix Connect package.
I'm new in IDS. I know very little about this as well as unix system. Are
there settings in the new server I have to consider when I want to access my
Informxi DB from windows to solaris? Or settings I have to check in IDS when
connecting from windows tru ODBC?
Hi,
No new settings required for the latest server as compared to the older
server except that you should make sure that the DB_LOCALE in the CLIENT
matches with that in the SERVER.
What is the error you are getting ?

Prem

Hi again. Sir I'm sorry but all I can do is show the enviroment variable in
both servers. I could not locat the DB_LOCAL setting. Can you help me again
how to modify this setting and how to list all setting. I'm sorry but I'm
really new in unix and informix.
First, let us know
* What is the ERROR you are getting when you try to connect to the UNIX
server from the WINDOWS XP CLIENT through ODBC driver ?
* Whether your IDS server which is running on UNIX platform is up ?

Prem

Test connection was NOT successful.[Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]
System Error occurred in network function.
This is the error return from the test ODBC. What could possibly be the
problem.
Hi,
Please make sure the following things are correct :
STEP 1 : UNIX Server is up and running. Create a database, say odbc_demo
on the UNIX server
STEP 2 : Open setnet32 on WINDOWS(Comes with your Informix CSDK/ I
CONNECT) and give your server details
Server Name : <Your server name>
Host Name : <your UNIX machine name>
Protocol Name : onsoctcp <This is the protocol which we
uses(mostly) for WINDOWS>
Service Name : <Port number>
Also don't forget to give informix UID/PWD
and save your changes
STEP 3 : Make sure that the environment variable INFORMIXDIR is set to your
CSDK installation(on WINDOWS), in the SYSTEM VARIABLES (Right click My
Computer and click Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables ->
System Variables)
STEP 4 : Restart your WINDOWS machine
STEP 6 : Goto ODBC Data Source Administrator(odbcad32) on WINDOWS and try
creating a new DSN pointing to the created database : odbc_demo
When you respond the next time, please let us know what you did for the ALL
the steps mentioned above. If you did something which you are not sure,
then please do mention them, so that your problem can be rectified easily.
Regards,
Prem
