Is the C API for ER officially dead and buried?

I want to make a Perl module to control the ER - perhaps even present a twinkling GUI under Tk :-) If the API is long gone, I seem to remember that cdr could be put into interactive mode by invoking plain old cdr and then sending commands like "list repl" etc down stdin. Is that true and still in existence, or am I deluding myself? If I can spawn "cdr" in interactive mode and drive it down a socket pair. Is it's I/O unbuffered, or will I get buffering problems with this?
It's currently in the 'twilight-zone'.... As far back as I can remember, typing cdr by itself has always displayed the 'help' menu. > > If I can spawn "cdr" in interactive mode and drive it down a socket pair. > Is it's I/O unbuffered, or will I get buffering problems with this?
