Help Needed With NewEra Window Painter GPFs

I've been having an intermittent, recurring problem with the NewEra Window Painter that's very frustrating. If anyone can offer a solution and/or workaround for this problem (detailed below), I'd really appreciate it. At random intervals (i.e. every month or so), my Window Painter gets into a state where it generates General Protection Faults whenever it's asked to open a WIF file. All my efforts to unwedge the software (e.g. by rebooting my PC or reinstalling the software) have no effect, yet, at some random time later, the problem disappears and everything is normal (that is to say, *something* I do resets the software but I don't know what it is). My Window Painter is currently in this broken state and I can't get it to work. More specifically, I've running version 2.00.WC1 of Window Painter under Windows 3.1 on a Compaq Deskpro 466 with 24 Mbytes of memory and using the SE 6.0 DB engine. When I cold boot my PC, start Windows and then Window Painter, select the File, Open menu option and select a WIF file, Window Painter halts with the following message box: -------------------------------------------------------------------- | IWP | | An error has occurred in your application. | | If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file. | | If you choose Close, your application will terminate. | | --------- -------- | | | Close | |Ignore| | | --------- -------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- Selecting Close causes this GPF error box to appear: ------------------------------------------------------------ | Application Error | | IWP caused a General Protection Fault in | | module ISQLI501.DLL at 0001:A5D7 | | --------- | | | Close | | | --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ On the other hand, if I select Ignore from the first message box, there is initially no effect and selecting Ignore a second time produces a GPF in module INFDA.DLL at 0003:0C08. If I repeatedly start Window Painter and trigger these GPF errors, the system eventually gets to a state when Window Painter won't even start. Double clicking on the Window Painter icon immediately produces the first IWP application error box above. In this case, selecting Close produces a GPF in module KCMWLIB.DLL at 0002:01DB. Selecting Ignore will either (a) have no effect, (b) produce a GPF in module PRKAPR.DLL at 0003:0AD7, or (c) lock up my entire system, depending on the number of times I've tried to start Window Painter. I suspect that the problem is caused by a memory allocation error with a subsequent memory leak when Window Painter dies. But starting other software before starting Window Painter doesn't prevent the error. It happens with all of my WIF files and the problem goes away without changing any of my WIF files. My INI files haven't changed. IWP.EXE hasn't changed. I'm stuck. My current theory is that it's possible to get things back to normal by using one or more of the other Informix tools to change the state of one or more shared DLL's in such a way that Window Painter will load a WIF file successfully. And once I can get it to load one WIF file without dying, Window Painter will work with all of them (until the problem reoccurs). But that's all I have. I'm unable to unkink Window Painter on a consistent, repeatable way and it's driving me nuts! Does anyone have any ideas? Dan -- Average behaviour produces average results. Nonconformity is thus necessary (but not sufficient) if you want exceptional results.
