25590: Authentication error
Posted in 2006
A user on HP-UX 11 with Informix 7 got "-25590: Authentication error" when connecting via dbaccess, even though it was a local connection on the server machine; he'd already checked matching root/informix passwords, .rhosts, /etc/hosts and /etc/services, and the online.log showed nothing. Replies suggested checking the online.log for clues, verifying rsh/rcp works if remote, and noted that -25590 means a bad/unknown username or password on an explicit connection, or a mismatch with PAM/other advanced authentication (e.g. LDAP). Others asked for exact OS and IDS version numbers. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi,
When trying to connect to a database through dbaccess on Unix, I keep getting
this error message
25590: Authentication error
I have tried the below steps.
- Made sure that the root of O/S and Informix user passwords are same
- Restarted the DB in informix login
- Checked the .rhosts file , but wasn't able to spot anything wrong
- Checked the /etc/hosts and /etc/services file, but again wasn't able to spot
anything wrong
Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time..
Cheers

Are you operating from 1 ux server to a second ux server ?
Normally if you can't do unix commands "rcp" or "rsh", then it's a unix
problem.

Hi,
Look what is written in the online.log file on the DB-server. It normally
gives you clues why the error is thrown.
E.g. it could be that depending on your version of IDS, the IP-Address is
transferred as hex ...

25590 is a login name or password error when connecting to the server using an
explicit username and password. Either the server does not recognize the user,
the password for that user was mistyped or is out of date on the server side,
or
there is some authentication mismatch if you are using PAM or some other
advanced authentication.

Hi All, Thanks for your replies.. However, the issue persists. Below are some clarifications for the questions asked .. The issue is on HP Unix 11 with Informix 7 and I am trying to access the DB server from the same computer where the server is installed and not through a second server.. The online.log also doesn't show any errors.. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated.. Thanks for your time. Cheers Deepak V

Do you mean HP-UX 11.00, 11.11 or 11.23, or some other version? PA-RISC? Itanium? Do you mean IDS or SE? Do you mean 7.00, 7.1x, 7.2x or 7.3x? Assuming you mean IDS 7.31, what are the letters and numbers after that, such as HC3 or FD7. They may matter! and I am trying to access the DB > server from the same computer where the server is installed and not > through a > second server.. > > The online.log also doesn't show any errors.. This suggests that it is IDS because SE doesn't have an online log file. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated. > I don't have the original question in front of me, so it is a bit hard to work out what your issue is beyond "How to get rid of -25590 errors". This is where a good trail of the original question and intermediate answers can help. Are you playing with any interesting authentication methods? Do you use LDAP-based passwords, for example?
