why is connect via C++ so slow?

I'm using M$ Visual Studio 6 with E-SQL. The CONNECT TO takes forever, even when the client application and Informix server are on the same machine and there is no DNS to slow things down. The same SQL executed via dbaccess runs quickly. Other clients such as ilogin and sql editor also connect quickly, so I don't think the problem is with Informix. If anyone out there has the same problem, please share you knowledge with me. Thanks, David Henry

There is an important detail that I ommitted, connection is via ISAPI.
