Report refreshing screen

I have 4GL programs that uses forms and "start report x to pipe str". The problem with it is that it always refreshes the screen on executing the statement even though there is no output from the "str" which is of a form "cat >> /tmp/x". If I don't use the pipe option, the screen does not refresh. Is there a way to avoid this irritating feature ?
