ipload hangs

Dear Informix Gurus,
I am at a client site with IDS 9.21 UC5 on AIX 4.3.3
I need to reorg a huge table reaching its limits 16
million rows.
I tried to use ipload by running Reflection X (a X windows simulation).
I was successfull in creating the unload job. But once I click on Run,
ipload hangs. For long time there is no activity on the server side.
After long time I see a Blocked Chkpt. At this stage server hangs and
need to bounce the instance.
I tried onpladm and it has the same behavior.
Can you let me know, if this is a bug or any known
issue with the version of IDS?
Thanks
dmrao
Without much details about your server and onstat, it looks to me that
you are blocking checkpoints by running this job. Also, looks to me
that database server in logging mode.
Since you are going to reorg this huge table, if database is in logging
mode, given the circumstances, it is likely to block checkpoint every
time you run this job.
1. Can you change logical logs to /dev/null ?
2. Can you turn database to NO LOG mode ?
Also, for reorg, remember, you need a lot of space as well.
If you can do both above things, try again IPLOAD first. If no success
then think on dblaod. dblaod is slower than IPLOAD.
In case, you can not or don't want to turn database in NO LOG mode, you
can use dbload which has got a command line switch (-n) to commit
desired no. of rows. dbload requires a command file as well.
Example:
File name: file1.cmd
File contents:
file "auprlink.unl" delimiter "|" 4;
insert into auprlink;
NB: auprlink.unl is a unload file and number 4 are the number of
columns in this auprlink table
dbload syntax:
dbload -d <database name> -c file1.cmd -l <logfile name> -n 10000 -r
NB: -r switch is without locking table (Optional), if you wish
otherwise you ignore or use -k for exclusive lock.
Good luck.
Hari
Hi Hari,
Thanks for the response.
I am doing my testing on a test server with a test db and a test table.
Test server: IDS9.21 UC5, AIX 4.3.3. If you need onconfig, please let
me know.
TestDB: Unbuffered and has only one table ' Test Table'
Test Table: 108 rows, 2 cols, 1 index.
During the time when the server reported Blocked CHKPT, I also noticed
Assert Failed: semop: errno = 36 in the online.log.
Let me know, if you need more info.
Thanks
dmrao

I had many functional and performance issues with HPL and 9.21. In the end
they were never really resolved, and we had to upgrade to IDS 9.30 to
re-orgainse large tables.
9.21 is long out of support now, so the natural migration path would be to
IDS 9.40.
