There is not an existing equivalent Informix 'sequence' object. Do you require the 'sequence' in order to generate unique keys??? As a DBA of both Oracle and Informix databases, I find that one of Oracle's biggest shortcomings is the lack of a 'SERIAL' datatype that I can use to automatically generate unique keys for (inserted) table rows. The whole notion of having to create (in Oracle) a separate sequence/insert-trigger scenario in order to generate unique rowids just opens up another management function for the DBA to have to administer. -- Tracey Hammett Database Administrator Agency for Health Care Administration, FL hammettk@fdhc.state.fl.us bus: 850-413-9072 fax: 850-922-0490 -----Original Message----- From: David Knox [mailto:david_knox@bigfoot.com] Sent: Monday, December 14, 1998 4:17 AM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: DB Sequences As someone who knows mostly Oracle, I was wondering if there is an equivalent to the Oracle sequence object which I can use in Informix? I don't really want to have to create a new single column table with a serial number in it just to give myself access to a number sequence!! Dave.
