Text Datatype in SPL???

I could sure use some help... I want to use a stored procedure to work with text data types. I am not using ESQL or 4GL as the calling application, so using a locator structure or the LOCATE statement is not a possibility. Can I get text data into and out of a stored procedure without using a locator structure or the LOCATE statement?
