Can't we just get along???
Posted in 2008
Not a technical support thread — it's a meta/flame-war spillover from an earlier post about XPS consulting work. Madison Pruet calls for calm; Fernando Nunes tries to redirect to a real question (do readers know COMMITTED READ/LAST COMMITTED isolation works on HDR/RSS/SDS secondary servers?), but gets only mockery in reply. The rest is bickering plus Eric Herber's longer comment on IBM's marketing/sales neglect of IDS versus DB2 and the lack of IDS in IBM's university program. No technical question is answered and no resolution is recorded.

Geesh... ;-)

I am programming a cloud-based geodetic PHP system on Linux cubes that is really cool, but I can't tell you about it because I'm under an NDA. It runs on an alpha release of a MySQL research lab concept, though. Or will do when I can get their shitty ODBC drivers to work. Thanks for chiming in Madison...always good to see you're "watching." Can you believe an innocent post about XPS work I've done recently spun all the way down to this? I posted the XPS info simply for those of us who "miss" that product terribly, and I thought that folks like me would get a kick out my kid-like enjoyment of working with it again after all these years. That was it - plain and simple. Mark Scranton Xtivia Inc. www.markscranton.com
No Mark, Its just you. ;-) Now why don't you give Stuart and the IIUG a call, I'm sure they're interested in all the XPS work you're doing and how hard you're working to keep these clients on IDS! :-P As to cock waving, sounds like a Europeon thing. ---------------------------------------- > From: mark.scranton@gmail.com > Subject: Re: Can't we just get along??? > Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 10:04:30 -0700 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > On Aug 28, 12:27 pm, Fernando Nunes wrote: >> Obnoxio The Clown wrote: >>> Fernando Nunes wrote: >>>> Obnoxio The Clown wrote: >> >>>>> Fernando Nunes wrote: >> >>>>>> Madison Pruet wrote: >> >>>>>>> Geesh... ;-) >> >>>>>> Possibly it depens on the size of our ego and the issues from the >>>>>> past... >>>>>> But let's try to move along, and I'll ask a question (sorry for >>>>>> getting back on this Madison, but I really want to know if it's just >>>>>> me ;) ): >> >>>>>> How many of the readers know that COMMITTED READ/LAST COMMITTED can >>>>>> be used in HDR/RSS servers (and also on SDS)? >> >>>>> Who cares? The willingness of XPS customers to move to IDS is a good sign and speaks for their satisfaction with the Informix technology. And this should also ring a bell at IBM. Customers won't migrate to DB2 (EEE), they are happy with Informix, so please IBM, don't press IDS into a niche (integrated/embedded OLTP). Give the customers the freedom of choice which IBM data server fits their needs best. BTW, if you look at the Gartner numbers regarding the DBMS market in 2007, it becomes clear where the problem of IBM is: http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssTechMediaTelecomNews/idUSN2634118720080826 We all heard about the fantastic IDS revenue growth in the last two years. So IDS couldn't be responsible for those disappointing numbers. This should ring another bell at IBM and I think it already did. They know that they need IDS and are investing money in the Informix technology. The amazing new features that we have seen in IDS 11 and 11.5 prove that point. However what is still missing is a clear strategy and internal education at IBM. My personal feeling is that the normal IBM sales approach is to recommend DB2 in every sales situation, regardless if the demand is high availability, OLTP, integrated or whatever and if this fails, they mention IDS. "Look customer, we have another data server that might better fit your needs. Unfortunately I've no knowledge about it and it is also hard to find someone in technical sales who knows the technology..." Disappointing to see how opportunities are missed and deals get lost because IBM doesn't make sure that their technical sales specialists get - beside DB2 - certified on IDS, so that they are able to recommend the right data server depending on the customer needs ! The other weak point that I'll continue to ride until we see some real improvements is the fact that a whole IBM team is travelling around the world promoting DB2 LUW at universities: http://channeldb2.ning.com/video/video/show?id=807741:Video:3902 Why can't the same team also teach IDS ? It shouldn't be too hard to add an IDS specialist to the team that would take over this part. Let's see if IBM is willing to repair those weak points. The IIUG 2009 conference will be a good place to ask the IBM managers about the progress they made in those areas. And I won't forget to do that :-) But let's also see the positive points. There have been a lot of improvements in the last two years regarding Informix@IBM. The Informix team inside IBM is working hard and has definitely made great progress. The IIUG has done a lot to promote Informix and is continuing to do so. Consultants on the road, companies like Oninit, Xtivia, Ardenta, Bytec, Alfatec and many many more are doing a great job bringing the Informix technology to the people. Let's further move on the road and push Informix forward. Together we are able to improve things and make the revolution going on. Everybody has the right to tell his opinion in this newsgroup, but we shouldn't personally attack each other. This doesn't help. Wish you a nice weekend.

Allegedly. In other words, Informix IBMers either don't care enough to partake, or they don't know the program exists (or something else. Maybe they're banned from partaking.) > Everybody has the right to tell his opinion in this newsgroup, but we > shouldn't personally > attack each other. This doesn't help. > It's great fun, though.
