interesting monitoring of cloud computing
Posted in 2009
Hi INFORMIXERs, those, who know me, do know, that I am always interested in the memory bandwith of a system in first place. Now reading about clouds everywhere, I found - noone ever speaks about the thunderstorms or those nasty dark grey clouds, with hail and all - and this: http://www.paessler.com/blog/2009/04/14/prtg-7/comparing-amazon-ec2-performance-with-other-cloudvps-hosting-options-and-real-hardware/ which is no surprise to me, as I started to play around with XEN when it was alpha ... We database people must keep this paessler guys closely watching, as long as they keep going. [ can it be long? ] But then, they claim to be innocent as they only want to showcase & advertise their monitoring software. Did I mention it today? A monitoring software has 3 tests to meet: When running alone on a nonvirtual system and monitoring it's own load, it shall only consume 1% of memory bandwith and 1% of the memory available 1% of CPU load 1% the possible I/O bandwith meassured in MB/sec AND in IOPS per sec. Else it is trash. Platinum DBVision actually met these tests back in 1996. It was the only one so far. And still today their help pages for monitoring INFORMIX IS the best IDS learning and tuning guide ever seen so far. But Platinum is long gone, CA bought it.
