I'd like to add to the confusion. From my experience, here are some very general factors that influence selection of the "right" database. Not all of the reasons are technical reasons: 1. Ease, comfort and other factors in dealing with a database vendor. If one is a small company and one is "blown off" by database base vendor A, but responded to by database vendor B, then one might follow up with B. Also if the person making the decision has stock in database vendor A he or she might be inclined to pick A versus B. 2. Anticipated degree of response and support after the product is purchased, and a support contract arranged. If database vendor A has a reputation for responding quickly and supportively to reported bugs, and vendor B does not, then one might go with A. 3. Performance. If very high performance is needed, then perhaps one should consider using Faircom Server or Raima Data manager, versus a relational product like Informix, Sybase or Oracle. 4. Administration. If little administration is desired then one might consider Informix SE (Standard Engine). If a lot of administration can be tolerated then Informix Online Dynamic Server might be chosen. However, SE will have fewer features and be less scalable than ODS. By the way, Vivian, how much time and effort will you be devoting to this research effort and what will be the length of the paper that you will write? This has a bearing on how to respond to your request. -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/rg_mkgrp.xp Create Your Own Free Member Forum
