Assert Failed: WARNING! Internal Error - Arithmeti
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 7.13 under HP-UX 10.01 reported repeated "Assert Failed: WARNING! Internal Error - Arithmetic Exception" messages (SIGFPE in the optimizer, sqoptim/opinit), followed by CPU pegged at 99% and errors even on SELECTs. Advice given: restart the engine (onmode -ky, oninit) to clear it, keep the af file, and identify/stop the offending user's query. John Miller noted HP-UX 10 had cases where multiplying small floats raised arithmetic exceptions, with corrections made in IDS 7.3. Others stressed the version and OS are long out of support, so upgrading (e.g. via 7.31 to 10.00) plus a newer OS was the real remedy. No confirmed fix is recorded in the thread.

Raise a call on support and have the af file ready to send. If you
need to get the engine running again quickly then onmode -ky and
oninit.

If the above version info is not a typo (i.e. should read 7.31) I guess
it is futile trying to open a call with IBM Support .
7.13 had been out of support even before IBM bought Informix.
I suggest to upgrade the system to a supported IDS version - along with
the operating system and hardware - HP-UX 10.01 doesn't sound supported
either.
Get an Informix consultant to help you with the task if your are unsure
how to do it.

In HPUX version 10 there were many times when you multiplied
small floating numbers and the result was a arithmetic exception.
Version 7.3 had some corrections to alleviate this situation.

Today again we get the error below and I have no clue how to tackle this situation and how to resolve this problem. We are using IDS 7.13 running on HP-UNIX 10.01? Can anybody help me to troubleshoot this? 13:43:13 Assert Failed: WARNING! Since the version you are using is seriously out of support, you have a problem. Does rebooting the server instance clear the problem? The error says that there was an arithmetic exception in someone's thread (one careyj@speedway). What was he (or she) doing at the time? Can you stop them doing it? There's no denying it should not be happening; the trouble is, the only way to get a fix is to upgrade to a supported version of IDS. And even that is not guaranteed to be easy - I'm not sure that IBM supports an in situ upgrade from 7.13 to 10.00 or later. If you upgrade to 7.31.xDy (you have about 5 days of support left on that!) and then move to 10.00, you should be OK. But you need to get moving swiftly...and you will need a more recent O/S than HP-UX 10.01 too. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2008.0513 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ "Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall never cease to be amused."
