Onbar

Question: is it advisable to use ISM (the storage manager bundled with IDS) for ON-Bar backups? One reply doubted ISM could write to tape, but others confirmed it does so reliably, including 4-way parallel backups to DLT drives. An IBM Informix developer noted ISM's limitations: it isn't really usable for/from remote machines, supports at most 4 parallel devices, and has only a basic ism_* command-line interface with largely undocumented nsr* extras. Conclusion: ISM is fine for smaller systems, but large/high-volume or remote setups should move to a full storage manager such as Tivoli or Legato.

Is it suggested to use ISM bundled with the IDS installation to perform on-bar backups?
ISM is good to backup to disk. I'm not sure that it backs up to tape... -----Original Message----- From: KENNETH PENZA [mailto:kenneth.penza@gov.mt] Sent: Tuesday, October 21, 2003 8:35 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Onbar [2053] Is it suggested to use ISM bundled with the IDS installation to perform on-bar backups? Backs up to tape like a charm - use it every day. -----Original Message----- From: John Carlson [mailto:John_Carlson@whsmithusa.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 21, 2003 8:56 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: RE: Onbar [2054] ISM is good to backup to disk. Hi, you certainly can, but you also should be aware of some limitations of ISM. E.g. - it cannot really be used for/from remote machines, - it can handle no more than 4 devices in parallel, - it has a basic interface with the "ism_..." command line utilities. Some more complicated tasks may be achieved with some "nsr..." utilities, but are largely un-documented, or cannot be done at all. So if you're satisfied with the facilities and features offered by ISM and see it fit for your (not very big) system, then you may well use it. If you have a large system, want to save vast amounts of data in the shortest possible time and utilize remote machines for backup, duplications, etc. then I advice to get a full sized storage manager product (e.g. Tivoli or Legato) for the production system after you've played around with ISM and got a good grasp of the concepts. It definitely can backup to tape. We run a 4 tape parallel backup to DLTs. Scott M.
