IDS Migration from 7.3 to 9.4 question

Hi Gurus, I just want to ask if there's anyone out there who performed a migration from 7.3 to 9.4? I am planning to migrate our DB. Here are some of my questions: These are my tasks. 1. setup a UNIX box. 2. Install IDS 9.4 software and create raw devices. 3. Migrate the data (via dbexport). i'm thinking of unloading the data from IDS 7.3 and dump it somewhere, the use HPL in loading the data into the new server (9.4). Question: Does the ontape between 7.3 and 9.4 will work? Thank you, Jack

Hi, we have done that - about 15 years ago .... Yes, conversion should work like that (dbexport/dbimport), and you should not run into problems. But - 9.40 is way out of date, though it was mostly stable ! You should consider migrating to 11.70 or 12.10. By the way, should work inplace (without unload/load), you should try it on a restored instance. Just in case you do not want to change the machine or chunk layout ... Hi Marcus, Appreciate your reply on this post. We all know that dbexport/dbimport or unload/HPL will work. I would like to know if the "ontape -s -L 0, ontape -r" will work too? same chunk layout. DB is around 700GB. Thanks again. Jack

No. Doing a backup with "ontape -s -L 0" in an older version followed by a restore with "ontape -r" in a newer version will not work. The same is true for ON-Bar. You cannot use ontape between different Informix versions, no. I have done migrations from 7.31 to 11.70 recently. Haven't migrated TO 9.40 in many years. Art Art S.
